What
is IYPP ?
The
aim of the Isolated Young
Persons Project
(IYPP) is to reduce or remove the social isolations of disabled and
non-disabled young people using the medium of communication technology
and to encourage them to express creativity and to obtain new skills
which are of value in their lives and careers. Or to put it another way … -
to help young people (11 yrs – 25 yrs old) who may feel isolated
because of where they live or a disability, feel more integrated by using
computers, have fun together in meeting rooms – ‘cybercafes’ , and/or
simply by linking individuals together through their home computer, via e-mail ,
forums and as the project develops – the potential of
video links and conferencing.
(ie you can see/hear the person you are communicating to/with) – above all –
enjoying the experience and being creative. It must be remembered however that a ‘standalone’ PC / Laptop / Notebook or Desktop (with a Printer) can provide considerable ‘fun’ by itself – is does not have to be connected to the phone line. For example – certificates / greeting cards / posters can be all be produced. Interactive Games can be played using keyboard or joystick control. Learning too can be enhancing by ‘tutorials’ and educational packages. Modern PC’s can generate very high quality sound allowing Musical compositions and playing / synthesising numerous instruments. – they really are an excellent means of education , fun and training. So why do I need a connection to the Internet then, you may ask ? – well in very simple terms – it provides quick and easy (usually cheap) communication. – electronic mail (e-mail). People can communicate across the world sending basic TEXT initially – as many messages as you want – when you want. – All you need is the email address – mine is mailto:phab@myrealbox.com – feel free to send me a message.
What
does the World Wide Web (WWW) bring then ? – check out www.phabengland.org.uk
- our Phab site will give you an idea. It ‘lifts’ the Internet into a more
organized structure – the ‘whole world’ can create ‘sites’ to share
information, sell their wares and make their ‘presence’ felt. This can be an individual , a Group or a massive
corporation – a ‘Web Site’ is
their ‘shop window’ for the world to see. Just
